Thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck and is vital to regulate our body"s metabolism. The thyroid generates hormones, helps control the body"s energy consumption, influences heart rate and temperature, and affects mood. When the thyroid gland malfunctions, it leads to several health problems, resulting in the gland producing too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) or too much (hyperthyroidism). There are two main types of thyroid - Hyperthyroidism & Hypothyroidism.
Thyroid Causes
-
Autoimmune Diseases: Certain conditions, such as Hashimoto"s thyroiditisand Graves" disease, are autoimmune disorders that attack the thyroid
-
Iodine Deficiency: Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, and its deficiency causes thyroid hypertrophy (goitre) and hypothyroidism.
-
Thyroiditis: Thyroid gland inflammation can lead to excessive or insufficient thyroid hormone production.
-
Nodules: Thyroid nodules are lumps in the thyroid that can rarely generate extra hormones, leading to hyperthyroidism.
-
Genetic Factors: A family history of thyroid disorders can increase the chance of developing thyroid issues.
